My German colleague tells me the reason that Hitler wore his distinctive moustachio as it was the only practical facial hair that would allow the correct wearing of a gas mask.  This would have been from his time in WWI and it stayed with him until his death.  Can anyone confirm / deny alter this tale???

I thought it was just fashion for the period (i.e. Charlie Chaplin, Oliver Hardy etc etc)

I've seen pictures of him in WW1, and he's got a big bushy handlebar type tache. I don't know at what point it became small.
