Strange place names

Where i live there is a town nearby called
"chipping sodbury" and a few miles down the road the city of "Bath",
We also have a small place called "Fishponds"

Do you have any weird and wonderful place names where you live or have heard of ?

I live in Chinnor - commonly pronounced as China by people who can't read. Gibralter is just up the road too.

Cornwall and Devon are the best places for weird names.

Piddletrenthide here in Dorset is well-known.

Agree with the Devon comment . Also some wacky names in wales such as Cardigan !!

Yep, we have Ham and Sandwich, a few miles from here.

When I lived in the Midlands, I was always fascinated by the rural village name of Wyre Piddle - ouch.

What about Cockermouth in Cumbria. Always makes me smile what I go to the lakes and see the sign.

Near here there are two adjacent streets called 'Paris' and 'Isle of Man' - not 'street', 'Lane' etc just the placename.

Place called Idle in Bradford - looks good above 'Idle working mens club'
Loose in Kent - 'Loose women's institute'

Chipping means "market" - related to "cheap" (and "Cheapside" in London).

Not place names but street names. here in Southport we have Cockle Joy-sticks Lane, Knobhall Lane, Manx Janes Lane make me giggle every time

by all accounts there is a place called Bell end near Bromsgrove !!
