Where has this trend come from - where, in answer to a question - people start their sentence / answer , with the word ' so ......'

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I know what you mean, it actually sounds a little patronising when the interviewer has asked an invited 'expert' in the studio to explain some scientific or political situation, they start off with 'So...what we have here....' or 'So..let me put it in simple terms....' and always seem to be instantly excoted that they are going to pour out their unrivalled knowledge to the ignorant masses.

If it continues with "So what you're saying is ..." that means the speaker is going to totally misunderstand your last statement, and supposdely repeat it back to you using other words, when in fact it will be the opposite of what you have just said.
Similarly, just saying "So ..." is a shortened version of the above - cutting straight to the misnunderstanding.
It's the hallmark of people who don't listen, or having listened, have failed to assimilate the information they have just heard becuase they are waiting to disagree.
