School proms, why?

I dont know why we in the UK have adopted this silly idea fron the USA of having a prom at the end of every school year. It puts tremendous pressure on parents who perhaps cant afford to go out and buy a prom dress, not to mention the big limo some of them have to have to get there. As usual it all ends up as a competition as to who has the best/most expensive dress. What's wrong with just having a school disco?
(This is my answer from another thread regarding what to wear at a prom but I thought it was a valid subject for discussion)

US TV, US culture invading everywhere.
I have a similar question regarding 'trick or treat'.
I guess some see an advantage and push for it while others have to endure.
I was gobsmacked when my eldest son's school did the 'prom' thing. P7 is far too young IMO
Don't get me started on the Graduation gumff from nursery to starting primary school.

Let children be children. It's too short a time in their lives.

ps. the previous year's P7 leavers had a school disco.
Here here! I hate all the americanisms that have been creeping into our lives. It's not big or clever to copy everything you see on TV why can't we just be British and proud of it.
I don't understand it either. How does it work if you go to a single sex school like I did?
LOL - Tiggs... I was thinking the same thing!! We just had a very poor school disco, but being an all girls school it was a bit pants!!!
The school disco was a bit pants. And we all wanted to dance with the one male teacher we all fancied! Lol
I agree completely. Why have we got to go around aping the Americans. I wonder if they copy us in any way? I wouldn't think so. They are not superior in any way, even if they think they are.
I don't think there was a male teacher who anyone fancied... either old, smelly or dating the RE teacher... lol...
Star, do they actually think ?!!!

Just asked OH if he ever danced with any of the female teachers he fancied.
I won't type the response, but it was a definite NO :)
... Good job there was an all boys school round the corner... and the hunk that was John Robinson *swoon*... Ahh... those were the days....
and quite often they are organised by a 'committee' of the most popular kids who want an excuse to show off...I really feel for those who don't fit in, or for what ever reason can't get a date.... just another thing to batter their self esteem even lower

/// The school disco was a bit pants./// If that isn't an Americanism I don't know what is!!! Ron.

'Pants', as used here, is not an Americanism, Ron, it's very British. Click http://www.worldwidew...calwords/tw-pan4.htmn for verification by a noted etymologist.
Oops, sorry about that. I'll try again.

we didn't have anything at the end of my school years, just the usual bundle with flour and eggs* and everyone writing messages and drawing knobs on your school shirt**
