Drugs

Maybe a heavy subject for national day off before the long holiday ....
But anyway ...
Was watching a recorded TV show last night called Smugglers I think it was.
Anyway they were searching for drugs at the major ports and finding quantities of Cocaine , Heroine and Cannabis.
What got me thinking was that the more successful they are at finding drugs and stopping the supply , then the laws of supply and demand says that those drugs that are on the street will increase in price. Thus the kind of people who take drugs (other than rock stars from the 70's) most likely have to turn to criminal activities to finance their habit.
Thus the better the job the customs officers do , the more crime they cause as a side effect.
What would happen to society if drugs were made legal and sold in a controlled fashion ?
The price of drugs would crash ...drug dealers would go out of business ...
Some scum bag will be less likely to turn to street crime to finance a habit , if they can buy them for next to nowt in Boots or somewhere ....
What would be the effect on society if all the drug users were on a permanent high ...or whatever effect the drugs give you ?

1) the vast majority of drug users are recreational drug users, if it got to the point they couldn't afford them they would not turn to crime, they would simply not do it, I know there is a percentage that are addicts and would turn to crime, but they are the minority that always gets reported in the papers (people going out, taking drugs, not getting into trouble or causing a crime wave and then going back to a normal job after the weekend doesn't make good headlines)
2) if they were legal they would be taxed to the level that it would probably still be cheaper to get them from the old dealers through the existing supply channels rather than from a chemist

I'm edging towards agreeing with you Sirandy, mainly because I think a controlled problem is better than what we have at the mo. I think, as I've said in a post to AOG, that the route of the majority of the really nasty anti-social behaviour nowadays is down to the fight for scummy heirarchy which revolves around dealers and the fight for control over the market.
I think seizing control of the market from the dealers would go a long way into resolving issues of serious street crime.
The problem of users will exist as it does today and at least then we'd have a better idea of what we're dealing with, and potentially taxing enough to pay towards resolving the issues.
This then only leaves us with the moral issues of governments supplying class A drugs!

How do you know your nurse is not recovering from a night on the town and the taxi driver has not slept for 2 days as things stand today ?
Hummm ...so if cocaine was legal and you could buy it from Boots and prove you are over 21 years old etc ...Would you try it ? Even with all the health warnings on what the side effects are ....(like with Cigarettes) ....
I would be scared ....but curious ....But hey here speaks a man who don't smoke or drink (Well I do drink liquid water - root beer - diet coke )
