Giving children weird names

Why do poeple usually from deprived backgrounds give their children weird 'made up' names? i find it amazing that a lot of the time (not all) you can usually tell what the parent is like by the child's name. Has anyone else noticed this?

I think its the parents idea of making their child appear to be 'original' and 'unique' then plonking them in front of the TV and feeding them junk food so they end up like every other unimaginative clone out there.

Does a rich kid with a weird name in a public school suffer the same as a secondary modern kid. This reminds me of the song 'a boy called Sue'

Norman always has been a weird name trig!

It was my dad's name, and i got it as a middle name, and was teased throughout school for it.

Bet they will tell all their friends their name is something entirely different, such as Joe or Bill or something like that. Who wants to be saddled with such silly names. Even my grandson who is called Thomas hates it and prefers it to be shortened to Tom. He will not answer if you call him Thomas.

Did you know that the name 'Wendy' was not popular until JM Barrie used it in Peter Pan?

He did not, as popular myth has it - invent the name. It was popular as a shortened version Gwendoline, but Barrie used the name when a daughter of friends of his called him her 'Friendly' but could not pronounce the name, so it became Wendy - and he liked it. The poor child died aged six, but her name for the author lives on.

You only have to spend a while trawling through old parish registers to see some really odd names that babies were given..........they knock Shaznay Passion into a cocked hat !

You can't shorten Darcy, quassia, so I expect he will either use his second name (I know a lot of people who do this) if he has one or make up a fictitious one which he likes. I know a Tony whose real name is Earnest - well who wants to be called that?

research has shown that giving your child a name such as Chantelle, Chardonnay, Mercedes etc can hamper them in the job stakes too

Makes me cringe every time I hear some screeching woman screech Wayne at the top of her lungs *shudder*. Call me a snob if you like, but I'd rather be a snob than call my kids Wayne or Waynetta TVM

As regards shortening Darcy, many schoolchildren will have no problem with that. They will simply remove the D. Poor kid!

Alright, yes I agree, not always poeple from 'deprived' backgrounds, let's just say 'chavy' for want of a better word and these can be rich or poor.

There seems to be a common trend of naming children with what i would class as a surname. Riley,Wilson and lewis are examples of this. Unusual spellings is another trend such as Rebeka, i am never quite sure if they are trying to be original or just can't spell.

Yes and also giving them shortened names instead of the full correct version. eg Tom, should be Thomas on the birth certificate.

New names are a lot better than those which were 'worn' be the father and his father and his father and his father.

Argentine, Louisa, Rufus, Benedetta etc. makes me cringe.

A cult near her gives their devotees names including Funny Haha. I kid you not.

I once worked with a guy who went out to a job where the customer was called Hatstand Pincer-Movement

But any made up name would be preferable to the names of Biblical monsters like Abraham or Joshua.
