the syllable 'man' should be dropped from the word 'chairman' isn't also right and proper to drop it from the word 'woman'?

But isn't it ridiculous that we should change anything at all? So a few words have the letters 'man' in them, so what? Just another example of the witless having little to occupy their little minds.
And you decided that it made you so cross you'd put a thread on a website about it?

Still, as long as it kept you occupied....
Brilliant, R1Geezer, that's cheered me up no end.
good thinking, LewFatherper

The word 'witless' rang a bell then Jack? I had thought of expressing my opinions on the subject of winning the lottery, buying a yacht and spending the rest of my life in supreme luxury, but tempting though it was decided to vent my anger on the little busy-bodies whose lives are so dull and routine their only escape is continually gripe, whinge and whine over everything which has grabbed their brief attention span for a moment. Why can't everyone be like you Jack - an intellectual GIANT anyone would be a fool to cross swords with?
like the witless idiot who came up with standees, instead of standing, notice for passengers on some London buses. Too much time on their hands.

Exactly. Got it in one.
I have never understood why anyone needed to change words like chairman, it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
"how would you term manhole cover then?"

referring to it as a womanhole would make working for the sewer company more popular.

'If it ain't broke . . .'
...then a woman aint been near it.
suggest that would be wohole, seeing you drop the man, good idea
What next......Should we drop 'male' from the word 'female.??!!

Ron.
i have never made demands that words are changed, as said before don't care
yeah what next ? the postie being called the personperson instead of the maleman ?
em...Please do not think that I was hitting-out at you.
My posting was just coincidentally a comment which appeared to be a response to yours. Like you, I couldn't care less. Furthermore, whilst I have always supported ladies in their quest for equal rights, I see no reason for words which have been used for generations to be altered. (OMG someone will now suggest that 'lad' in 'ladies is masculine.)

Ron.
i think that's why it's become postie, it just seems easier
what would postwoman patricia have to say i wonder.
A rubbishman had become a garbage collector, then a sanitation worker, and soon they will be known as Garbologists.
whilst i think sometimes these things go to far and end up seeming silly, its important to acknowledge and welcome equality...
the battle of the sexes has been far too one-sided for centuries and its time things changed.

there is nothing wrong with changing some things and just saying chair, or chairperson - its as easy to say.

i dont see the need to change words like manager, because although the 1st 3 letters are man, it doesnt imply the person is a man...
i do think altering certain words such as actor to actress, manager to manageress is pointless and unnecessary...many female actors refuse to use the term actress...

for my industry it is often pointed out when a job ad states - cameraman, or propman or makeup girl or wardrobe mistress...
because although its mainly just that the poster hasnt even considered the terms they have chosen, its really quite wrong to specify gender unless theres a very good reason - especially when there are industry standard equivalemnts to all the above terms that actually are far more commonly used....such as camera op, props, makeup artist, and wardrobe...
