and the couple concerned aren't putting out a gift list as they said they didn't want to 'presume on peoples pockets' during these diffiult financial times. - Which I thought was pretty decent of them. So, as they already have set up house together, what do you think would be an acceptable gift? I don't think you can ever have enough towels or bed linen, or hubby thought something for the garden, like a fruit tree sapling - any ideas anybody? Around £30-£40

Definitely the tree idea. There's something quite romantic about it, I think.
How about buying them a really good bottle of champagne and maybe a pair of champagne flutes to go with them?
Champagne flutes inscribed with 'Mr and Mrs'. Tacky but cute...
What about gift vouchers, Argos, M & S, Amazon or the Post Office ones cover quita a large number of shops.
Why not buy them a piece of land on the moon. You can pretty much guarantee nobody else will have...
Gift vouchers for sure, they can get what they are short of, House of Fraser, M&S, even Argos, good luck.
A stone cross scripted with the Lords Prayer...

The moon is a good idea. Or you can name a star after them. Sickly... but some find that sort of thing sweet.
Gift vouchers......they can buy what they would like with then, or maybe a nice bird table for their garden!............
I was invited to a wedding where the couple had already been living together for years. I couldn't think of a present but I decided that storage space is always useful, so I bought something like this:

It's obviously totally unromantic and I didn't really think that it would be appreciated but, a few months later, the couple asked me where I'd bought it as it was the most useful present that they'd received and they wanted to get another one!

So putting 'practicality' ahead of 'romanticism' might not be such a bad thing!
It's not horrid. I have one right next to me..!!

get them an ice cream maker then....!!

A Truncheon? The mind boggles. Vouchers is sounding quite a possibility at the mo
A table lamp. Shades can be changed at regular intervals to suit any decor so at least it's something they can keep and make use of daily.
We had this problem some time ago, we bought them a £50 voucher from Tesco, they were delighted, it went a long way to their weekly shop.
