The questioner is not wrong - on the remastered version of the song (I don't have the original but I'd assume it's not on there) there's a mobile phone distinctly ringing in the background during the third verse. I've wondered about that for years as well...any ideas?

Thanks for that. At least I know I'm not going bananas. You see I bought 'Teenage Kicks', a double album of 70's music from a dodgy boot fair the other day. The CD has been 'burned' and I was wondering if it was due to that.
