Anyone else find the subject matter for this episode - lesbianism and abortion - a bit strange? Perhaps this is normal in the modern world. I also find I mix up Lady H and her maid - they look so alike.

Agreed. I didn't think it as necessary for them to actually kiss, and all the way through kept hoping they didn't do it again.
I don't think it's going to be on my 'can't miss' list!

I agree too, and find there are too many characters in it, couldn't remember who everyone is from last week. I have given up on it now and won't bother watching it any more. Oh and the very first episode of Upstairs Downstairs (from 1971!!) is being shown on ITV3 on Wednesday at 9.50AM, and I quote from my TV mag ' Its relaxed pace makes the current revival seem positively frenetic.' rosy

As soon as someone mentioned the Women's League of Health & Beauty in last night's episode, I remembered back to the silky white blouse with the badge & the silky black shorts worn by my mother. As I was born late in 1938 & could remember the uniform well, I think this organisation must have still be in existence during the War years.

Regarding the book that was causing so many raised eyebrows, what about 'The Well of Loneliness' by Ratcliffe Hall?

This is the BBC - so you have an ethnic minority (The Indian - what is he doing here? He doesn't seem to have job!). The Down's Syndrome girl (if a rich family had a child with a mental disability it was sent to the coast to be looked after by a paid family - I lived in Sussex as a child and there were loads of them who had been farmed out!). The lesbians, the 'revolutionary' getting rights for the family, the Barnardo's girl and the conscientous objector.

It is so contrived it is bordering on the idiotic!

I'm so glad redhelen .I thought I was an outcast considering the amount of criticism that's been levied at it .
I have the whole DVD set of the original which was brilliant in it's time .
But ,this is something different ,new era ,new people ,different ideas . The aristocracy on the brink of war. I love it.
