You are given £40,000 a year for the rest of your life, and access to a time machine. The time machine can only go to 1900 and it is a one way trip only. The money is the same if you use the time machine or not, so travelling back to 1900 will allow you to support a mansion and servants.
Would you take the trip in the time machine or not?
I'd be back in 1900 in a flash!
Modest sporting estate in the shires, real food, real people and the opportunity to create a 'model' community on the estate along the lines of a beneficial dictatorship.
No TV, no puters, live music and a pair of Purdeys for a few guineas......
Where do I queue?
I know my kids and grandkids could not survive without modern technology, they would go mad living in the 1900's even with all that money. Money's no good if you can't get the things you want...Now if the machine wiped out memories then that would be a different kettle of fish :o)
I can't imagine anyone wanting to go back to any time in the past. We might moan about the state of the world we live in but realistically none of us would want to be without our PCs, our medical service or our freedom to travel no matter how much money we have to live on..........surely?
I watched that Turn back Time thing recently .I would have hated to be an Edwardian especially being a woman even if I did have mega money at my disposal .
No proper medicine ,no teevee ,no fridges ,no telephones ...having to wear a corset .... and the Kaiser on the warpath ...no thank you .
Maidup: That's the usual findings when the question is put out to survey, yes. About 2 3rds say they'd stay because they couldn't live without the advanced world we live in now.
And I agree. While I'd like to go meet Ezra Pound as a young man in London in 1908, I think I'd decide to stay in the now.
