Why do certain sections of society give their children such stupid names?

I saw one mother the other day and her baby was called 'Tee-Jay'! When you hear names like that you can be almost certain to know what the parents are going to be like. It has also been found in studies that those people with these pretentious names have less chance of finding employment but of course this wouldn't even have been considered in the circles that these people move in.

One of my wife's colleagues decided to give her baby girl the name "Infinity". I think she gets called "Fin" for short.

Some people call my nephew AJ because his first and middle names are Anthony Jamie. I don't think he'll struggle fitting in certain circles with the name Anthony on his passport.

The problem with generalisations like this is that there are numerous exceptions. Conversely, the fact it is a generalisation also means that there is also a large degree of truth in it too.

Never mind Dave, I like your name - I have only ever known nice Dave's. Me I prefer bog standard names, especially for men. And I have a good imagination. But each to his own. Children's names do tend to give away the 'class' of the parents - Rupert, Piers, Henry, etc.......... ;o)

The only people I have ever heard of 'called' Spike were Spike Milligan (Terence Alan) and Spike Jones. I believe SJ was called that because, when young, he was very thin and was likened to the spikes used in constructing railway lines. I have no idea about SM.
