I joined facebook about 3 weeks ago and I found it moderately interesting.
Last Monday I rec'd a request to be a friend from someone who I didn't know.
I message that person and asked if he knew me.
He/she replied with; "I don't know you, I just wanna be your friend."
That seems a bit sinister to me. Anybody have any idea what's going on here or has anyone experienced something similar?

If you get requests from people you don't know then I would recommend clicking the ignore link.
If you don't know the name, just ignore them. It's simple.
Happens a lot. Some people just like collecting "friends" on FB.

I should ignore it and make your privacy settings more secure. Presumably your profile can be viewed by anyone if a complete stranger has contacted you. Not a good idea in my opinion.
Sometimes FB recommends friends of friends, and as you will see, some people are just friend collectors, in a bid to have as many "friends" as possible. Just ignore them. Now and again you might get a really random one from someone who has no connection to you or your friends and just types random names. There's no harm, just ignore them.
What I would do is just go to the top right area of their profile page and click the little rosette button and block them then you will not hear from them again via face book. Do not reply if you are not interested in whatever they are offering, as they may keep replying. This is what I have done and it works for me. In fact I have found you can do something similar on most of the social sites. Its down to settings. If you do it as a matter of course it will tend to go away.
first, browse his account, may be he from anther country and this a good way to exchange cultures. Talk to him and get to know his thoughts, then decide to ignore him or continue in friendship

I responded to his request by asking him to tell me a bit about himself - no response from him
