/// More people would support a political party that pledged to stop all immigration or promised to reduce the number of Muslims than one that encouraged multiculturalism ///
Well here we have it, apart from the 18-24 year olds most of Britain's voters support far-right principles.
/// Goodwin, a lecturer at Nottingham University, said: "While we see further evidence of an emerging generation that is more tolerant towards – and accepting of – immigration and diversity, there remains clear potential for a party that … promises to halt immigration, reduce the number of Muslims and prioritise traditional British values over other cultures." ///

It seems when people have to make a serious decision rather than answer an opinion poll then they have other priorites that they vote for rather than immigration.
The poll is not that remarkable when the two best selling newspapers, and the best selling broadsheet, daily present ALL muslims in a very negative way. The fact the young people do not read a daily newspapers probably accounts for them not being taken in by the blame the immigrants for everything rubbish.

Why would it not be a Guardian report, aog? The Guardian and the Times are not afraid to report fact. Interesting, from the poll, that it's the over 60s that are most in favour of such policies associated with right- wing parties. No coincidence there.; the Daily Mail, with its high percentage of readers in that age group, already knows that.

sp,
The likes of the EDL and BNP are, to me, no more than extremist agitators who obviously thrive especially in times of hardship, i.e. recessions etc?
You're correct, they have absolutely nothing to offer, are totally non structured, and definitely undemocratic and completel unconstitutional.
No more than ill disciplined rabble rousers who prey on peoples' insecurities and prejudicies. But dangerous nevertheless.

I think you are being a little belittling towards young people, there must be many who read daily newspapers, they may not generally buy them, but at least they keep 'up to track' on line.
Why Immigration doesn't particularly bother them is yet another matter, perhaps it is because they have grown up with immigrants all around them, in their Schools, in their Collages and Universities, in their Work-Places and in their Pubs and Clubs etc.
Whereas the Older Generations, can remember when we didn't have the huge amounts of immigrants that we see today, we can also see how much our country has changed, but not for the better I'm afraid.

Not sure how much it has changed, aog. We've got a few Muslim bombers rather than Irish ones, more black and brown people about, more mixed race unions, but is the country so very different, or worse, to live in than it was 50 years ago, or more? And if worse, how and why are the black and brown people to blame?

First and foremost did anyone say anything about black or brown people? Immigrants come in all skin shades.
/// but is the country so very different, or worse, to live in than it was 50 years ago, or more? ///
Yes it is more overcrowded, our NHS is bulging at the seams, waiting times are longer, getting an appointment with a GP is more difficult, remember the times when if one had just a touch of the flu your GP would come out night or day to attend one?
The schools are over crowded, and our children are held back because so many of the children can not speak English.
There are not enough houses to accommodate our young couples.
Crime is more widespread especially among young Blacks (you mentioned colour)

There was yet another 14 year old stabbed to death on a London bus only last night.

AOG,as to who said anything about black or brown people, when you write of immigration, it always seems to me that you mean black or brown people. Who else had you in mind? And whatever do you think gave me that impression, if it's a false one? Can you think of anything you've said or done that would create it ?
