at one point when Cardinal Basil Hume was Archbishop Of Westminster he was one of the favourites to become Pope - what year would that have been?

Surely it could only have been 1978?
The 3-pope year?
Whilst he may have been viewed as papabile by some, he was never a contender. He just took part in the papal conclaves.
He would have been perfect for pope, but he was too old.
