To be honest, most people just grasp at any opportunity to party. After all, most atheists and agnostics (together with many Jews and members of other faiths) 'celebrate' Christmas, even though they're not actually celebrating Christ's birth.
Similarly millions of Catholics enjoy bonfire night, even though it's actually an anti-Catholic commemoration.
If it's traditional to have a party (which, in the case of New Year, is based upon pre-Christian practices) most people are happy to go along with the tradition, even though there's no real logic to it.
Anyway, whether you believe in it or not, I'll wish you a Happy New Year anyway!
