If someone drinks for example 4 to 5 bottles of wine in total over a weekend, that is Friday to Sunday but then drinks nothing at all Monday to Thursday, does that allow the body to recover from the weekend binge?

its pickling your liver, that would take more than a few days of abstinence to reverse.
From that link ...

Section 10: "the report concluded that there was insufficient evidence to make completely confident statements about how much alcohol is safe"

"Are those that say "As long as it's with food it's okay" in the medical profession? Does drinking alcohol with food negates any damage by magically bypassing the liver and other organs? I think no"

i never said i was in the medical profession, i was saying that i didn't think drinking just over a bottle of wine in an evening with a meal was binge drinking but that drinking a lot quickly in order to get drunk was. that's my opinion and not need to be so sarky
That's exactly my point.

Do you really need studies, or need to be "Allowed" or not allowed to do something? Sometimes studies and governement findings may carry a little weight, other times not so much.

Without reading any studies does your commonsense tell you that 4-5 bottles are okay and do you thing smashing your bodies immune system, organs and brain neurons for 2-3 days allowed sufficient recovery before you then proceed to do the same damage over and over again?

Even the alcoholics i know knew the answer to this.
but that is exactly my point - you don't know how the 4-5 bottle of wine are being consumed, and my point is that, that does make a difference
If you think debate is "Sarky" then maybe you should step back and let less sensitive souls step into your place into the debate arena.
I'm not being sensitive you are being sarky
Look let's not play this "he said, she said" game, find a playground to that in, i'm not here for that.

Several posters have made some absurd posts and i'm putting forward my views, no ones forcing you to read my posts or take part so if my posts are being received as "sarky" ( I'm guessing this butcher of the english language means sarcastic) then please find something that will entertain you and make you smile.

I have things to do, goodbye.
Drinking to excess is always a risk, doing so regularly all the more so. The message has been clear for a long time now that binging is bad, worse than taking the same amount over the whole week. But of course 4 to 5 bottles a week suggest, at least to me, a deeper issue anyway. That would be almost 1 a day. Probably cause weight issues too.
My wife and I both liked a drink and there is no doubt that the amounts were increasing, one Sunday I suggested that we try and give up alcohol all together, we both agreed to try but as drink seemed to `rule` our social life it was without much hope of actually managing it. That was now over 4 years ago, and we still off the booze, feel better, got more money,go more places ( means we can drive back) all in all a good decision and recommend it to anyone thinking about trying..
even though the government guideline is arbitary there does need to be one. Else the hard and fast rule is 'drink as much as you like until you develop a serious health problem - then stop'.
That the guidelines are arbitary is a bit of a half-truth/urban myth

Much like the 30mph speed limit they were originally arbitary but there has been a ton of research since then

For example:

Mortality in England and Wales attributable to any drinking, drinking above sensible limits and drinking above lowest-risk level

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1360-0443.2004.00710.x/abstract;jsessionid=C1CF7B7FEAADE25FB5EEFBC8A23618C1.d02t02?systemMessage=Wiley+Online+Library+will+be+disrupted+on+23+February+from+10%3A00-12%3A00+BST+%2805%3A00-07%3A00+EDT%29+for+essential+maintenance&userIsAuthenticated=false&deniedAccessCustomisedMessage=

//Conclusions: Although overall mortality risks and benefits of alcohol consumption appear roughly equal, drinking above recommended limits remains responsible for many deaths and a large loss of person-years of life.//
Is it better for you to consume a bottle of vino in one evening or over a week?
I think I read somewhere that drinkers who have a bottle of wine every night with a meal, and that doesn't seem a lot, are in danger of harming their health in the long term.
If someone is drinking that much over a weekend, it suggests that they are uncomfortable in social situations, and like a lot of people, feel the need to be intoxicated in order to relax and 'have a good time'.

I would suggest that the person takes a serious look at why they feel so insecure in company, and address that, rather than masking it with alcohol and pretending that it is drinking for enjoyment, when it points to being something else entirely.
Maybe it's just how Stacey said on Gavin and Stacey ...

"We just likes getting' pissed"
to me binge drinking basicallly means a night on th lash... getting pissed.
not a few bottles over 3 days throughout the day
or, andy, perhaps people just like getting wrecked and having fun ... that does not mean they have some deep psychological issue ...

if they are doing it daily and have beer for breakfast then there is a problem of course
If you read the daily mail, you will find that consuming anything is a health problem.
Lol ....mcfluff , sensitive soul ......................lmao
