I Dont Suffer Fools Gladly

Someone at work fancies himself as management material. He's done the course etc etc and well on his way to promotion.

One of his favourite phrases is 'I dont suffer fools gladly' TBH I dont think this is a good tool to have in your management toolbox but nevertheless.

Is the phrase 'I dont suffer fools gladly' the same thing as impatience, but packaged up to give the illusion of intellectual superiority?

Its a nonesense phrase for a modern manager. Its often said about people but rarely said about oneself and not something to boast about. It usually means that someone has little time for people and especially those learning the job or trying to find their way in life. There's nothing intellectual about to and you might suggest to him that neirther do you suffer fools.

Nothing to do with patience, I am very patient but I also come across certain people that really irritate me, they are just "fools" that think they know it all, usually because they have a qualification or a degree under their belt. I'm not a great believer in qualifications on paper, they often mean absalutly nothing in my experience.

I am short tempered and impatient
I think I am superior to others
I am lacking in several qualities and intelligence but use this sentence to cover the facts up
I have an inferiority complex hidden under a huge ego
I have a very small willy

It sounds like a phrase used to describe a bully or a martinet. Anybody using it to describe themselves would be showing seriously bad judgement in their use of language.

Steer him/her away from any coaching/mentoring role and, if he/she gets up your right nostril, you may want to point out that these activities indeed are an important part of any management role.

It does smack of intellectual arrogance.

Only a fool would use a phrase like that. A happy, hardworking workforce is what any manager would strive for; and making a comment like that is not helping anybody (but himself). He sounds like an idiot.

This phrase is the one I hate the most. It is so arrogant. The person saying it is also saying he is the wisest person in the world and everyone else is beneath him in intelligence.

Doesn't suffer fools gladly means that I..the boss...the head...makes the decisions and if you don't like that set up.......then move off.

My usual answer to such idiocy is this:

"Gosh, you're very lucky. If I were to refuse to suffer people less intelligent than myself I'd have hardly anyone to talk to. And I certainly wouldn't be having this conversation."

I put this in the same class as people who talk in stupid sound-bites, or sayings such a ' let me just run this up your flagpole', 'at this moment in time,' or use their hand to make quotation marks, in other words, a D*ckhead!
