I have spent three and a half hours today, edging the lawn and titivating the flower beds. I have done the same thing for the last twenty years in this garden and I've still ended up with a bucket full of stones.

Where do these stones come from? Every year I get them out and the following year they are back.

What other 'life's mysteries' have you experienced?

I am not accepting multiplying coat hangers or disappearing/mutliplying biros and or socks..............

Always when I turn the TV on or over to check a programme I get the sodding adverts.
they may be meteorites ?
LOL gness me too. However tidily you think you've put cabled items away they always come out in knots.
Nor teaspoons Tilly?
DUST where does it all come from?
they just rise up as the soil settles around them. Rain, freezing/unfreezing etc creates little gaps in the soil below the surface; fine bits of soil sink into it but stones are too big to do so.

Question Author
Twenty years of stones, jno. That's a lot of stones!
Question Author
What do your teaspoons do, Prudie? Multiply or disappear?
Jno is scientifically correct though - if you shake a powdery substance - rubbed in fat and flour for example - the lumps always come to the top.
12 teaspoons down to 5 in about 3 years Tilly.
the earth is 4.5 billion years old so you've got a way to go. And what are you doing with them when you find them? You should probably drop them into a volcano to be remolten.
look in pack of cornflakes, the littlest ones are always at the bottom.

I put the stones in the bin, jno.
13mm spanners disappear when laid under the car. I cannot possibly put them out of reach as I'm laid under the car and don't move about much but, where have they gone. Even when I get out they are still missing. Perhaps 13mm spanners are the good ones and they have gone to heaven. I can always find those evil 10mm spanners though I sometimes wish they would go to Hell.
The stones keep appearing because the Devil and his workers are pushing them up. Though it could just be that water percolates down and some rests under each stone. When it freezes and expands the water pushes the stone upwards. The repetition of this process eventually brings the stone to the surface.

Teaspoons? I can never find any spoon in this house !
if you like breakfast cereal with dried fruit in and get annoyed when it all settles to the bottom of the box, before you pour out your portion, hold the box on its side and shake it from side to side. The fruit will all sift to the side of the box that is on top and when you turn the box up the right way, it will be evenly distributed throughout the depth of the box.
Tilly, just dig a hole and bury them!

But they will all rise to the surface, Ratter. It's a scientific fact.
I remember many years ago, we hadn't lived there long and were sorting the garden out, we had raked the ground for a lawn, it was a huge plot and had picked a mountain of stones of half of it. My mother visited and saw the pile, she asked where do they all come from. We told her they grew in the soil until the lawn covered it. She believed us and told her friends all about the growing stones. Very gullible lady. We had a job to keep our faces straight.
