Why Does Someone Suddenly Decide It Would Be A Good Idea To Take Drugs?

I don't understand why anyone would want to. Especially those in the entertainment world who become rich and famous, a lot of them decide start taking drugs such as cocaine or even heroin, why? I can maybe just about understand the homeless and destitute perhaps who have nothing to live for and are looking for a few hours of oblivion but someone at the opposite end of the social scale who are successful and have everything to live for , I just don't understand.

I am fully aware of that doctorb. Answerprancer's post was the closest to answering the op out of the rest of the posts, why some people then go further and become addicted is not really what dave50 asked.
I do have personal experience of many recreational and prescription drugs but haven't taken illegal/recreational for a few years now due to having serious health issues.

Apparently ;) am told, white china is not a drug but a substance that sobers the inebriated. The 5slags had it on Saturday and were so hyped up they didnt sleep till Tuesday.

You mean China White I think tambo. It could either refer to high purity heroin (unlikely) or one of the new 'legal highs'.

It doesn't sober you, just makes you more alert, the alcohol doesn't disappear from your system so you would still register as over the limit on a breathalyzer.

because they feel nice when you're doing them.....and you either have a good time being high or forget who you are. that's why......

I have always thought that people who are tempted by mind-altering substances must have a gaping hole in their personalities. Instead of counteracting this gaping hole with friends, hobbies, sports, new interests or just a really good book or puzzle, they think the hole will be filled by some outside substance or experience. When they find the gap is not filled, they think a bigger or more frequent dose is the answer - until addiction sets in.

I think I agree with atalanta, there must be something missing in their lives and must feel unfulfilled to want to take these substances.

It all depends what drugs you take and how frequent.

I don't know why someone would try heroin or crack (or similar drugs) but E's at a festival...that's a different matter.

I think the last drink I had ( alcoholic, that is) was a small dry sherry last Christmas. I may have another on my birthday next week.
