emmie, many different sectors of British society use special 'courts' to settle specific disputes. The Freemasons is one such society where members tend to settle business disputes between themselves; the Church of England is another where the heads of the Parish can determine who can and can't marry in their church and offer counselling and advice in marital disputes.
Local councils provide mediation for disputing neighbours.

Very often the Jewish and Sharia courts deal with things that no civil or criminal court can or will deal with.
i watched a very interesting documentary a few months ago about Sharia courts in UK, one of the cases was a woman who wanted to get a divorce from her husband on the grounds of his cruelty, he was lazy, didn't support her or the children, that kind of thing, i had thought she had good grounds for a separation, divorce but the man presiding, do women preside in these courts? asked her to leave it a while, go home and reflect on her behaviour, putting the onus, and the blame on her, i wondered as to why if you are faced with this sort of attitude you would actually get any kind of justice, particularly for women.
emmie, the Sharia court cannot grant her a legal divorce, only a divorce in the eyes of Allah. She may never have been legally married; she may already have been legally divorced - very similar to the Catholic Church, in fact.
she was married in a sharia court, so could only get a divorce in a sharia court, this is what i mean, no rights under our judicial system, if she is legally married in UK, she would get many more rights granted to her, not least protection for her and the children, as it was she was sent off with basically a flea in her ear for not treating her husband well, it make me bloody mad i can tell you.

well only time will tell whether we will have problems in the future,
what i can't get my head around is how some seem to actively think that we are all racist, knuckle dragging morons, can someone explain to me why that would be the case, if one is concerned about immigration?

And if we're talking about 'special courts' and special laws how about military court marshals that allow soldiers guilty of firearms offenses to walk out of court with suspended sentences!

Oh but that's different I suppose
Anyone condoning the practice of sharia law in the UK is at best naive and at worst highly dangerous. Every Friday afternoon in Saudi someone has their head chopped off in a football stadium to the braying satisfaction of a mob of uneducated pond life of the type shown in the BBC documentary. I'm grateful to jomifl for the link, it was absorbing, but why out of the 30,000 muslim residents of Luton can the 100 extremists not be suppressed and modified by the majority, who claimed not to speak to them.
Good point Kandro
emmie, the advantage of a muslim wedding is mainly for the man as the wedding has no legal status so the wife has none of the rights that go with a legal marriage in the UK. No next of kin rights, no inheritance tax opt out. Muslim wives they can be dumped on the street when they are of no further use to their 'husband'.
Why can the extremists not be supressed?

Not really good points

They are not surpressed for the same reason we don't suppress the BNP

You start locking up people because you don't like what they say then you know where that ends up!

You seem to be suggesting that they support them because they let them speak

Would you deny Nick Griffin the right to speak - do you support him?
And you're missing the point about Sharia law in the UK

It does not override UK law - it relies on all parties agreeing to be bound by it - so in reality it is not 'law' but rather a form of arbitration.

You see muslims in the UK beheading each other for drinking?

No? why do you suppose that is when it's against Sharia law
Jake, I think Khandro was wondering why the good and law abiding devotees of the 'religion of peace' (and extreme irony) don't suppress their more unruly co-believers. I can think of several reasons, none of them encouraging or boding well for the future.

//I am concerned when I see muslims trying to implement sharia law in the uk// So how many times have you seen that? Or have you only "seen" them in the UK press?
That's looking at it with something of a jaundiced eye ^. It would have its good points too
Both sides seem to make the case for re-education camps.

//The Beth Din Courts have been used for many years in the UK….//

//how about military court marshals….//

Naive and ill-considered analogies. Judaism does not seek to convert and Military courts are just that. Islam, however, at its best seeks to convert and at its worst is determined to inflict its abhorrent philosophy upon the entire world – and we ignore that at our peril. There can be no comparison.
