In A Corridor, Do You Walk On The Right Or Left?

Was in a shopping centre the other day, walking through a corridor.
I stayed to the left, as you do on the road, most people went to the right.

So, in a corridor, should you walk on the left or the right?

It depends whether there's a door to the left or right side that I want to go through.

I was wondering about that today... I think most people seem to walk on the right unless as B00 says there's something particular they want to do like turn left or look in a shop window.

I always walk on the right, the same on a stair case.

Never gave it a thought till you mentioned it but thinking about it I would mostly go on the left till I need to cross over .

Usually on the left unless there is a specific reason for me to walk on the right.

I remember at school you had to walk on the left in corridors or on stairs.

The Tube too.

There sees to a lot of ditherers around here so it's virtually impossible to walk in a straight line.

I never even thought about it - I'd usually go down the middle, it depends on the circumstances. Same as walking on the pavement.

In shopping centre, went up escalator, which was on left.
Stepped off and continued on left hand side.
Bumped into everyone who seemed to walk on other side.

I agree with eve - hold hands and no running!

As a pedestrian you are supposed to have enough sense to avoid bumping into others without obligatory rules.

I would walk on the left hoping that a gentleman would be walking on my right with his sword arm ready to protect me. (Sorry lefties, would reverse for you.)

Many London Underground stations have notices, some of which say to keep to the right, while others say to keep to the left. It's to do with the layout of the individual stations, and is meant to keep people moving as efficiently as possible with the least obstruction to others.

I do the same. If every one did this the there wound be a lot less hold up on the way to where you want to go. When I was in New York natives followed this by walking in the side that you drive. Very efficient.

When walking along a corridor I just follow those nice people in white coats because my straitjacket makes it hard for me to push or pull doors.
