Are We Turning Into A Nation Of Lily-Livered ‘Wusses’?
32 Answers
This question arose in my mind from the 'HIGNFY' thread in News. What is going on in this country? So many easily offended people! If they’re not instantly apparently practically mortally wounded by what someone else says, they appear to dissect any offerings to find something else to be offended about – even if it’s on behalf of someone else who might not actually be offended. What happened to ‘sticks and stones’, and ‘fight your own battles’ - or to personal pride, strength of character, and to a man's (or a woman's) freedom of thought and speech?

Not sure where exactly you're coming from, Naomi, but I feel that taking offence has been encouraged in this country by the direction we have taken - the human rights and discrimination concepts have taken such a grip on us that "freedom of thought and speech" (in your OP) have taken a back seat .
That's all one sentence - I must be doing a rant, sorry!

In fairness, looking after each other, standing up to bullies, even on others' behalf, is not bad thing. The thread about Have I Got News For You is more around trying to stick up for someone who patently didn't need it. Farage , as folk has said, would have known the risks and decided they were worth it. One needs to know when wading in and helping the weak, is appropriate.
You mean like coming on here atalanta.
I've notice that the slightest thing sets some people off, their behaviour is so pompous and self important. I think a lot of it is down to the Human Rights business and the compensation culture that we have now. No one can say anything for fear of upsetting someones rights or race or whatever. Freedom of thought and speech is slowly being eroded.
