hi :)
i'm 23, i have social anxiety and general as well as anxiety attacks. I am currently taking Cipramil Anti D's, and have been having cognitive therapy for some time with a great psychologist. I've read that exercise can really help reduce anxiety and stress, but i noticed my anxiety decreased dramatically when i did not exercise. One morning i went for a walk for 20 mins, a few hours after i was having severe facial flushing and extreme anxiety when i met up with my bf, and also again that night at dinner with my family. The anxiety lasted for 3 days then i felt calmer. I havent exercised since, would you happen to know what could be happening here? One doctor told me i should only do slow, gentle walking. Is this a sign of an over active sympathetic nervous system? What do you think?
Thanks i would really appreciate an answer!! Cheers :)
I've suffered at the hands of panic disorder before. I found exercise to be a problem because I was over compensating when out of breath. ie I was hyperventilating which in turn triggered a panic. Vicious circle really. I got round it by reading up on breathing techniques and controlling my breathing. It took a conscious effort for a while to control it, but after a while (a long while!) it became second nature most of the time. If I feel slightly flushed / out of breath now, I step back and take count of how my breathing is. If I'm panting like a dog in summer, I slow it down....
Why don't you try yoga? It's great for physical and emotional health and I always have a great nights sleep after a lesson.
I went through a phase a few years ago of screaming in my sleep. I think it was caused by stress or anxiety. I found that doing some breathing I learned in yoga helped calm me down before I fell asleep and eventually my screams became moans and now I hardly ever have those either!
Whenever I feel nervous or anxious I put the breathing into practice - one thing I learned was to 'inhale' positive thoughts and 'exhale' the negative ones. I find it really works!
Along with an earlier poster, I would really recommend classical yoga as well as perhaps a 20 min walk a day or every other day. I suffer with anxiety and although I work, I do not exercise at all really. Which is silly as it makes you feel alot better.
Also suffer from anxiety from time to time. Also found that vigorous exercise doesn't make me feel good but Yoga, I love. It really does calm you and I agree with the slow 20 minute walks from another ABer....I also find gardening, pulling weeds and planting very relaxing.
I feel for you, Me and my fella both suffer from social anxiety, got really bad now! I suggest you try to do some kind of hobbie and keep socializing because the less people you see i am afraid it just gets worse. I am forcing myself to stay at work but i don't exersise because of the fear of people, I just try and walk my dogs, exersise will help you! xx good luck
Anxiety is a powerful mental illness that affects everyone, adults, teens and even children. It is so powerful that it does not only affect an individual but their family as well.
