Okay here's the deal:
I have a standard deck of 52 cards.
I bet I can beat you at a game of 5 card poker.
I'll beat any hand you get - note I'll beat your hand, not draw with you.
You can even choose your own cards from the deck.
I choose my 5 cards first; then you choose your 5 cards.
I then discard as many, or as few cards, as I wish (anything from 0-5 cards) from my hand and then choose the equivalent number of cards from the deck to replace the ones I've discarded. The discarded cards go onto a separate pile and cannot be reused by either player. You do the same - discard a number of cards and choose whichever cards you want from the remaining cards in the deck, to replace the ones you've discarded.
We've now both got 5 cards each ....... but I'll beat you :)
Who wants to challenge me ??
Royal flush needs a 10, and giz has it though! I wonder what happens if you pick four Jacks and another ace, though... ah, but then he'll just choose 6,7,8,9 in a fixed suit...
The trick is that he's stopping you from picking any straight flush, and ensuring that he can himself later. best hand you can make now is 5 6 7 8 9 of hearts, say.
Jolly, I discard 3 tens and the ace (leaving me holding the 10 of clubs) and I choose from the deck the jack, queen, king and ace of clubs. I now have a royal flush - you can't match this cos I hold a 10 and the other 3 are in the discarded pile - I win :)
