Especially on television whether it be real life or a drama and also I've noticed it more and more when dining out, they sit with elbow on the table eating with only a fork. What's happened to using a knife and fork correctly? i suppose it's yet another piece of etiquette that's not considered important these days.

I use a knife to push things onto my fork.
I have known some people to eat sandwiches with a knife and fork.
standard american practice

cutting up everything at the beginning and then shovelling it all in
I eat chicken drumsticks (for example) with my fingers. People who skirt around the bone with a knife, therefore leaving a huge chunk of meat only to be binned later, annoy me more!

They have been watching too many American TV programs !

And/or...they haven't been brought up properly ! Elbows on the table was one of the worst sins that my brothers and I could have committed when we were growing up in the late 50's/early 60's !
I'm sad and regressed to childhood.... I just use a spoon when I can

I expect your friend in the 70's that didn't have his hat on indoors as well !

My Mother, if she were still alive, would disagree with you most violently about whether it mattered or not !

Are you sure about that? I must have been doing it wrong all my life.
If the food can be eaten with one utensil why be pretentious and pretend it needs two?
If it needs two then that is a different scenario.
I'm really fussy when it comes to table manners. But....I come from a family that eat like pigs. Watching them puts me off my food. All they'd have to do is add in the odd oink oink.
i suppose lots of people need their right hand free for their mobile
That's a point Aelmpvw, must get the "selfie" with dinner.
Its the "elbows on the table" bit that my old Mum would have a problem with !
Jackdaw33 - "Left-handed people swap hands, knife in the left, fork in the right."

I'm left-handed (or as my wife calls it - disabled) and I don't swap hands.

Not to bothered about the fork thing, however, I save a very special loathing for people who hold the knife like a pen. Shooting really is too good for them.
And I have a son who does that, Deskdiary.......peow peow!
Country's gone to the dogs. Still : a man can always punch an underling if he doesn't get his steak :-)
"When dining out, they eat with an elbow on a table eating with only a fork".

Where are you taking these dates, and do they ever meet?
When at home I only use a knife when it is required, when eating out I use a knife and fork as is expected.
It's also quite rude to yell out to a waiter "Could I have a fork n knife please!".
