It seems from the comments of his peers that Mr Kennedy was regarded as a thoroughly decent man who acknowledged his flaws and faced them with dignity.
I was particularly surprised, and impressed, by Alistair Campbell whom I would never have put down as anyone's empathetic confidante, but apparently he and Mr Kennedy were close friends, as were their mutual families, bound initially in the case of the two men through shared experiences of addiction.
