No one should be considered for asylum, unless they have with them proof of identity and country of origin.
Identity cards should be compulsory just as in most countries, and no one allowed employment unless in possession of the said card.

Presumably anything can be forged or copied by clever criminals even banknotes, are we prepared to stop using money because it can be forged ? I think not. I am tired of the excuses it is high time we tightened up with regards to All our defences, Ok I'm an old fart but I was one of those who was against building the channel tunnel to link us closer to Europe & look...

Fair comment except for the ID card nonsense which are unnecessary for those known to be UK citizens. We are free citizens in this country, not a number for governmental manipulation. A card showing permission to be here to a non UK citizen or a recent arrival, should suffice.
Of course ALL immigrants should be held at comfortable but not excessively so detention centres prior to either being allowed in or sent back. How else can one keep tabs on them ? Those with all the right papers / permissions should not even need to reach them, those without will need to stay twiddling their thumbs until the authorities process their application.
Of course there is no reason to ship across the channel those who don't have the papers in the first place. A sovereign nation has to be in control of who arrives to stay. And we have no vacancies at present.

I'm happy to help whenever you want me to help you explain what you mean.
I wonder whether this objective or making Africa as attractive as Europe to the migrants can be achieved in our lifetime. Some would argue (and yes I'm putting words in the mouths of others here) it is already happening by a process of movement of large numbers of peopel from poorer to richer nations.

I cannot get it into my head why some people are so against ID cards in this country. I repeat what I have said so many times we all had to carry an ID card in the war time ( 1939 - 1945) & it did us no harm at all, in fact it was considered most beneficial. Get a grip people we need to know who is entitled to be in this country legally.
I'm not sure though, whiskeryron, about those migrants who are here and are awaiting a decision. Would we give them a temporary ID card which they have to renew every so often?
And what would we do if we found someone without one and without any other papers? And would we treat an African looking person any different to a white 85 year old great grandmother who had no ID card or passport. There seem to be alot of unknowns to me
Fraudsters are avble to produce fake driving licences and passports that fool the authorities so maybe an ID card could be forged just as easily.

Let us get back to the proud nation we once were for goodness sake.
Are we to believe that an illegal immigrant will give up trying to enter ther UK when they realise they don't have a National ID Card?
It will make no difference at all.
ID cards are A back door way of snooping on law abiding Britons that has been rejected by Parliament many times. They will not help in the current situation one little bit.

Indeed
Also,
"No one should be considered for asylum, unless they have with them proof of identity and country of origin. "
And if they don't have that then send them back: oh, wait a minute, we don't know where they come from as they have no proof and won't say. Just as well no one's listening to this nonsense :-)

That is the problem, there are many with much more authority than you will ever have, and who hold similar views to your own, that is why they are not listening to sense.
They don't know the difference between sense and nonsense, and that is why we are in the mess we now find ourselves.
