Many surgeons do have beards, but of course one does have a mask to cover the greater part of the beard. However, many surgeons including myself believe that would infections have little to do with the operating theatre transmission of infections, most being infected in the wards by grubby fingers poking at the dressings. I went through a period whereby i didn't cover the wounds with dressings and sent them back to the ward "nude" , no dressings on the incisions. The rate of wound infections fell, but the nursing staff and admin were in such a "tizz" that i gave it up.
