Do you think, when the time comes, that Charles will be king or will he pass it on to his son, William?

I don't mind Charlie but i just don't think he's in touch with the real world. Wills seems to have a level head on, a decent family man and is liked by most of the country.

Of course, we could just buckle-up, hold tight and give it to Harry. Now that would be a fun ride!!!!!

Charles would make a splendid monarch. He's actually a very nice, caring man.
I can't see any reason why Charles would not make a good job of Head Of State. After all, he has spent the last 70 years preparing for the role.

Just how much prep does anyone need ?
Just as an aside, William/Kate peform less Royal duties (work) at their age than Charles/Diana did.

Murdo....I share your republican views !

But its not going to matter a jot who is next on the throne. The same excesses will still be there. I can't think of any reason why William will do anything different than has been done these many long years.
All the palaces are part of our heritage and should be preserved forever.

Doesn't need downsizing so much as abolishing. Living acronism. No actual useful job there anyway. Just folk for some to bow down to.

Murdo, of the current royal residences, Buckingham palace, Windsor castle (including the royal lodge), holyrood, Hillsborough, Clarence house, Kensington palace (including Wren House), st James's palace, thatched hose lodge (Richmond) and bagshot park belong to the state.

are you seriously suggesting that the next monarch be given permission to dispose of government assets?

Our Royal Family are the envy of the world, Murdo. They sell more magazines in Europe than any of the European Royal Families.

Old Geezer what a load of inflammatory tosh. The Royal family bring millions into the country every year from tourism alone. Do you really thing Americans and Chinese would pay good money to visit the home of the current Prime Minister? They head charities and represent the UK all over the World and I can bet work a lot harder than you ever have had to, with the Press scanning every move they make.
No mushroom! I've never been called that before :-)
NoMercy....and that is just what will happen, even in the extremely unlikely event of Britain becoming a republic.
Charles will be king.
Thousands of tourists visit Buckingham palace every year whether the queen is in residence or not. It's the attraction, not the inhabitants .
^I don't think that's true. London is full of tourists for Royal events.
