I agree with K. Before university, I did the overland stint to Pakistan.

Iran/Persia was still under the Shah, and, thus, very westernised: one would hardly notice any superficial difference to any west-European country. (How he ruled is another story.) There were excellent long-distant roads, with refreshing, air-conditioned "restaurants" at most petrol stations.
Afghanistan offered a similar experience, though less so, due to its lack of financial power (= no oil).
