With the accept/except pronunciation, "accept" can be pronounced (roughly) as "ax-ept" so it may be the word with an "x" makes more sense to some folk.
It falls into the same category as people who hear "should have" as "should've" and write it as "should of".
Perhaps if people pronounced accept and except properly, they would not use the wrong word in the first place !
