Competitive Poppy-Wearing
66 Answers
Just seen a presenter on Countryfile wearing a poppy. It's the 22nd of October, for goodness sake - way too early. I hate this look-at-how-much-I care early wearing of poppies, especially on TV. I always wear one, but in November.

Spare a thought, too, for the men and women of the White Poppy appeal. And don't make it a kind thought. This wretched outfit "believes that there are better ways of solving conflicts than killing strangers". That is how they describe the sacrifice of British and Allied lives in the inescapable war against Nazi Germany and the Axis powers.
People who wear white poppies – who include the sanctimonious prats of the "Christian" think tank Ekklesia – not only dishonour our war dead: they also assert their supposed moral superiority over the 40 million Britons who wear British Legion red poppies.
What should you do if you see a white poppy wearer today? At the very least – if I may borrow a phrase from my colleague Alan Cochrane – you should give them a cheery wave not involving the use of all your fingers.

From your heading I thought it was about how many and how big the Poppies were. Guinness Book of Record attempt and all that.
Although I do think they come out too early (1st Nov is a good starting point I think) they also remind people to get one, if they chose to do so.
All these rememberance days pugs bear, comics relieve. They all end up being a surprise of 'Oh, it's this week is it??'

@18.46. I had, and continue to have, a little covert AB animosity, from a long standing and well "supported" ""member"" , about I think 9 months or so ago. Subject........white poppies. I agree 100% with you Baldric. Notice how it is "fashionable" to roll out Halloween as early as possible though. Not a whimper .

I think that a lot of Countryfile is recorded and at the time its not known when the item will be shown....therefore better to be seen wearing an early poppy than not to be seen wearing a late one. I too think there are better ways of solving conflict than killing strangers and I expect most of us do. I don't think that negates respecting the sacrifice that was made by both those in the Armed Forces and the civilians and by survivors as well as those who were killed. I think the white poppy appeal folk (where does the money go?) would have been polite to choose a different emblem though. I hope no one feels inclined to dismiss those who wear purple poppies?
then will folk buy a black poppy? http:// news.bb c.co.uk /olmedi a/16350 00/imag es/_163 6327_bl ackpopp y300.jp g
not me, keep it red and be done with it....
