A think there's a typo somewhere in that phrase.
This is Malaysia, showcase for multiculturalism and diversity.

I think a cracking start VE would be for us to actually implement the laws that we have, so where you are seeing girls with FGM, it's imperative that we prosecute, absolutely imperative, until there are consequences people won't change. At the same time educate the generation coming up through school. Integration is vital, I would like to see everyone, men...

So it would appear the only problem is Muslim girls under the minimum legal marriage age of 16 can wed with the consent of the Shariah court and their parents and as yet the Shariah Court has not said yes. (Presumable it can and does).
One wonders how many times this has happened in the West, I can't imagine it hasn't somewhere as it would be very difficult to track.
Definitely paedophilia under the cover of religion (now where have we heard that before?)

Malaysia has a federal system of some sort, Youngmafbog. Some states are run under Sharia, including, I believe, the penal code - hadood or something? - you know, the amputation stuff and all that.
As for child marriages and polygamy, I'd imagine they're common throughout Europe. Like FGM.
Coming to a town near you.
Nope, already here.

gulliver - // Jerry Lee Lewis ,in 1958, was barred from entering The UK, after marriage to a Thirteen year old girl in USA, thought to be his cousin, for fear of public demonstrations. //
These instances throw into sharp relief the cultural differences between different societies.
What amounts to child abuse and incest in one culture, is perfectly acceptable and normal in another culture.
The moral dilema occurs when when culture attempts to enforce its attitudes onto another.

YMB - // Not sure of the connection to Lewis given it was some 60 years ago and was an individual not a group belief thing as far as I know. Apart from, of course, both are very wrong. //
It was a 'group belief thing' insofar as marriages among cousins and under-age marriages were very much the norm in the rural Southern States at that time. It was so much a part of normal life that Jerry Lee saw no issue in bringing his young wife with him on tour, and was shocked at the outrage that his actions caused here in the UK.
// BTW Richard the II's second wife was just 6 years old. //
Again, betrothal of young children was very common in those times, to secure land and titles. It was more of a 'marker' for the future, rather than the notion that the child would commence married life then and there.

sanmac - // Therefore we are creating a moral dilemma when we attempt to enforce our attitudes towards child abuse and incest upon the muslim community in our country? (Response to post at 1330) //
The moral dilemma I referred to was in abstract for the purposes of debate.
In real terms, and within western culture, it is not a moral dilemma, it is a moral imperative, but that was not the point I made.

Yes. That's the point. Do we enforce laws against paedophilia, or do allow it because it is some savage's moral "norm"? And if we allow it for the savage do we also allow it for everybody else?

Clearly child marriage is unacceptable but the age of consent varies wildly across Europe ( as low as 13) and you can STILL marry in some US states at 14, I think what Andy was trying to say that anyone brought up in a culture finds nothing strange or remarkable about that culture so when they encounter another culture with polar positions on things it is both a surprise and shock to them. education is clearly the way ion all cases as beating people with a stick about how primitive their culture is will only meet with resistance. We need to eradicate child marriages world wide, so de-normalisng that in cultures where it is normal is very much the way forward, and that doesn't take 5 minutes.
