He was not a wise man, he was an egotistical lane changer who used his doubtless talent with language to stir up people who knew no better as bullets for himself to fire out of his particularly nasty and insidious personal gun, against anyone who was no indigenous white British. He was a disgrace and even The Times called him such after that speech.

kvalidir - I heard his 'Rivers of Blood' speech live on TV so yes I do realise quite a few things about it. In my original post I did not refer to that speech, I was referring to some pertinent points he made throughout his political carer about our future, wise words that have in most part come true. When reading wiki or other references one is getting a biased view, and your reference to 'even the Times' calling him a disgrace brought a wry smile. What you can't look up is the fact that back in 1968 it was reported on TV that over 65% of the 'men on the street' ( yes they could say that in 1968) backed what he was saying. If you haven't already, read the full speech. His predictions for the year 2000 are way off the mark with regard to how many immigrants would be coming into the country -he underestimated by 1000's. He also predicted that many would not integrate, even when born into the UK and that the UK would have to bend to their belief systems. Who can deny, whether you are left of centre or right of centre, that many things he has predicted have not come true. Its just these days one is not allowed to voice these concerns in public without fear of being called a right wing extremist.

I read his speech years ago thanks AL, and a right wing biased bigot he most certainly was. You can smile as wryly as you like, for The Times in 1968 (and pretty much every other Daily for that matter) to publicly castigate him for his opinions and behaviour (not to mention the harm he did his political career with that speech) underlines perfectly how unacceptable to 'the man on the street' his opinions really were.He was removed from the shadow cabinet because even they considered him to be a frothing maniac.
Just because you were personally there (my grandmother spoke in opposition to his views as a point of interest at the time) doesn't make your opinion right then or now, and I utterly reject that almost anything he prophesied has come to pass, it's merely scaremongering to suggest that it has. The man was toxic, self serving and unhelpful in the creation of a multi ethnic stable society.

kval The majority of working class people in 1968 agreed with Powell on immigration. I could not give a flying F what the Times newspaper thought on the subject. Powell was removed from the Shadow Cabinet because he did not agree proposed amendments to the Race Relations Bill, and it looked badly on Ted Heath who was hoping the Tories would get in at the next general elections.
My original post stated 'like or abhor' him, then made reference to his opinions on unregulated immigration. I did not make reference to the Rivers of Blood speech until replying to a subsequent post.
How I see it, and this is my opinion and many others, Enoch Powell predicted exactly what is happening now.
You may prefer to live in your cosy multi-cultural bubble, a great big melting pot, and truth be told so would I, but the reality is so different. Gangs of black youths are terrorizing huge areas of our cities, Asian gangs are grooming and raping white children, British Caucasians have to be mindful of everything they say and do in case they offend some 'ethnic minority' and dare to hoist the British flag and you are a right wing extremist. This is not scaremongering, its day to day reality, and Enoch Powell predicted it.

You are still talking about a tiny percentage of immigrants and non indigenous British people though AL. We have our own home grown problem elements, which are less easy to lump into an ethnic group to point the finger at. what about the vast majority of perfectly respectable black people, Asians, Muslims and immigrants, they DON'T get reported in the paper because being a decent human being is non news. It's not living in a 'multi-cultural bubble' it's simple getting a grip on the fact that the horrors that are reported are not representative of the groups you're talking about as a whole.
I am afraid that I agree with AL, Theland and Sparkly.. Enoch may not be very popular with a lot of people but you have to admit that most of the things he predicted have happened. We no longer live in a society where we have free speech because we have to be careful what we say just in case we offend a minority, we have to be careful what we do and how we are just in case of causing offence. We even have difficulty celebrating our own saints day because of the flag causing offence.
