My answer was the same as tigger's. Humans created God to explain what they didn't understand.

Man.
Are you religious?

My parents weren't... they always told me they didn't believe in god.

If you feel the same, you should do the same... I don't believe in lying to kids.

If you believe in god, then you should be able to answer the question.

I am Atheist but happy to let my child choose whatever faith (or none) that they wish. To that end, I try to answer any questions they ask me fully and with no bias.
Well it's hard to discuss god when his existence itself is questionable.

It seems this question is answered in one of two ways.. From the perspective of someone who believes in god, and from the perspective of someone who doesn't.

By not explaining to your kid that you're a non believer, you're subtly influencing him towards believing in god by not denying your faith in his existence immediately.
Iggle Piggle, as an atheist, if your child asked you 'Who created God?', what would your response be?
The biblical answer is...

"No one made the Creator of the universe. He had no beginning, and will have no ending. He is the eternal, self-existing Being."
Put your question into any search engine and you'll get many many results - of course the true answer is we don't know.

I have always felt there's no shame in saying to a child that their question is a hard or impossible one to answer.

Start here and see where other references take you.

My child is fully aware of my Atheism but is also aware that he may ask any question and I will answer or find out if I lack the knowledge. In this case, I lack the knowledge!
Iggle Piggle, //In this case, I lack the knowledge!//

What knowledge? You don’t believe a god exists so the only truthful answer you can give is just that. From an atheistic point of view there is no knowledge to be sought.
As an Atheist, you have the knowledge (in your world / mind / society / life) that there is no god. So to imply that there is an answer to an unanswerable question about a hypothetical potential, is pretty bonkers is it not?
My answer was the same as tigger's. Humans created God to explain what they didn't understand.
The answer for your kid would be..

"If there is or was a god, then the christian theory is no on made him... He always was and always will be".
As a child grows so their questioning and understanding grows. I think the whole subject should be discussed as questions arise. if my child asked me that question, I would say that as I don't believe in God then it's not a question I can possibly answer. My child went to a little CofE village primary school, with prayers and hymns and teaching about Jesus. He decided he didn't believe in God whilst in that school. Much the same time as he decided he didn't believe in Father Christmas. We never influenced him intentially, but I suppose if we were religious he would have caught on at a young age.
Tell home the truth.
Some people believe and others do not.
Then tell him what the believers believe.
One cannot properly explain something which they themselves do not understand.

That the universe was 'created' is a failed premise. Creativity is only made possible given a highly evolved, highly intelligent organism which itself only exists by virtue of an already existing universe which provided the means and process by which its development became possible.

"We are stardust, we are golden, we are billions years old carbon." JM

We, everything in it and the universe itself are the products of natural processes we are only beginning to understand.

There are no shortcuts to understanding.
Too presumptions.
Nothing is more presumptuous than claiming you 'know' that something for which there is no evidence whatsoever was responsible ... and that you don't only know what was responsible but who!!

You beat me to it!!
Like a universe from nothing?
Yeah that makes sense!
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost is just somebody's unholy hoax.
