Is Beaujolais Nouveau Old Hat?

Can't remember the last time I heard it mentioned. Always used to be a big thing with the supermarkets promoting it. Many yonks ago we had a super new beajolais from Tesco's and bought a couple of cases of it. Had a e a very pretty label - white with pink flowers. Ring a bell, anybody?

's food thrI'm reminded of this because I mentioned on a "what's cooking?" thread yesterday that my Saturday lunch would be a ham sandwich and a a domaine Beaujolais (a Julienas). I should have added that I would also be listening to my favourite Abba song: "Gamay, gamay, gamay un vin after midnight".

Oddly enough we were saying the same thing the other day, it used to be a big thing getting the Nouveau.
People realised that 9 times out of 10 it was 'Rubbish' and not worth drinking until it had matured and aged ! It used to be a 'Big Event' with shops opening all night so they could sell it just after Midnight on Beaujolais Noveau day !
Most of it was so bad, you would be better off putting it on your chips instead of Vinegar !

One of the biggest (successful) confidence tricks of all time, they had some brought by courier to my old Cotswold pub - the Green Dragon- & the regulars (ah where are they now?) all stood round sipping & nodding approvingly, pretending it was good, when actually it was rubbish, but we didn't want to disappoint our kind patron .
Beaujolais Nouveau does not age well due to the reduced level of tannins.

If you get a bottle and it's drinkable then enjoy it while you can.
I recall the yuppies in Barnes West London would have races to bring back the first case of B.N. Not many pubs did not compete in the race.
I always thought it was awful except one year when it was reasonable.. I would much prefer a Rioja. Tells you something about B.N. when those in the nose (pun intended) advocate a good red allowed to breathe at room temperature. Last time I saw it the trend and recommendation was to serve it chilled. I wonder why??? :-)

It was quite tasty some years 79 was good.
retro, part of the reason is that houses are warmer than they were. Room temperature for wine is actually not room temperature as we know it
yep, it was how the firesides got shot of their tish plonk to a load of Yuppie mugs. Now proper Bojolly now that's a different thing entirely!
Yes, Beauj "Noov" is old hat and never terribly good to begin with.

We had two quite remarkable wines from Aldi yesterday ... WOTW to follow ...

If you want to enjoy 'new season' wines, forget about Beaujolais Nouveau and try the 'new season' white wines from the Rhine valley. They're absolutely gorgeous!

There's just one small problem though: the producers never export any of the stuff! You have to go to Germany to enjoy it ;-)

I worked alongside and with the German ambassadeur to the UK in the Deutches Bottshaft Belgrave Sq Central London. His name was Herr Richtofen and related to the Red Baron himself. Every Christmas a case of German red wine was delivered to our office from the embassy chauffeur. It came to the UK via the diplomatic bag. It was definitely the finest red I ever savoured. I defy anyone to find German red in the UK unless they burgle the Bottshaft.

God forbid the fools who demonstrated in Grosvenor Square in the late 60's against Vietnam. They had no idea what was waiting for them at the top of the US Embassy front stair landing and in the flanks of the ground floor lobby.If they knew they would be thankful to the police who held the line. Are those actually German Reds? I gave up looking in most UK vintners after I retired. Aldi and Lidl had not established the foothold that they now have so never bothered to look for it there when they become more popular.
