It would help though, Davebro, if
(a) people actually read the party manifestos in the first place ; and
(b) were in a position to evaluate whether the sums in them actually add up.
Far too many people seem happy to vote for politicians who promise to give far more money to schools, the NHS, social care, etc, etc, while at the same time promising not to raise taxes (or even to cut them). People who can't see the fundamental flaw in such plans shouldn't be allowed to vote!
So, Remainers think that a good lump of older voters (mostly Brexiteers) shouldn't be voting and Brexiteers think that teen voters (mostly remainers) shouldn't vote.
In other news, grass is still green and poop still stinks.
Agree with the view if think the poll is accurate?
I’m a bit suspicious of these polls. Especially that one which claimed leave voters approved of violence against politicians.
This is related to specific questions not voting in general, but plainly such views are misguided if understandable.
And are a separate matter from extending the franchise generally to younger people.
We all want political parties to support and fund things that we are interested and we generally assume there's a "money tree" to pay for them. My recollection of the 2017 election is that May was doing OK then she said that funding for social care for older people needed to be reviewed and a way for them to contribute would have to be found. Immediately she lost the retired vote, despite everyone knowing deep down that a fair way of funding was needed.
I agree ttt, I have an A Level in Economics and wouldn't allow myself to vote. Totally disinterested in politics, as they all just lie. A character assessment may be better, if we had to qualify people, but the bigger range, the better imo.
Anyway, votes mean nothing now, so it is all hypothetical really.
The government shouldn't start and end with just the economy, imo anyway. Also they need to decide priorities of where tax money goes, say... and that needs different awareness.
Anyone read 'In The Wet' by Neville Shute? A core theme is allocating the number of votes (up to 5 per person) linked to education/service to country etc.. It's a good book and I read it many years ago.... many. many years. :)
