Having Strangers In Your Home Ettiquette
23 Answers
I have issues with assertiveness. I find because I dont have strong boundaries people see me as a soft touch and take advantage of me .... well, they did and now I am changing!
I have started using a mobile hairdresser for convenience.I can save travel time and have all my packages delivered that morning as I know I am going to be in to sign for it. But it is always uncomfortable to have strangers in my home, and I am sure many feel like this.
This hairdresser was here for 4 hours (he was doing a colour job). Overall polite but kept telling me about his investments and how he was buying all these properties and how 'rich' he was etc.
I never talk about money or wealth because I think it is private and no ones business.
The issue I have might seem petty to you..... about half way in the work I asked him if he wanted water because I was having a bottle. He said he wanted tea. I said I didn't have it. He then aggressively said 'I WANT tea'. In the end I opened my cupboards and showed him I did not have it!
I thought that would be the end of it, but when he was leaving he said 'next time I want tea' ......!
I am in 2 minds about re-booking him. He did a good job work-wise on my hair colour but
1. he kept going on about how rich he was which made me uncomfortable because why should I care?!
2. he was aggressive about the whole tea thing. I know it sounds petty but he is not a guest in my house and I feel uncomfortable that he should be able to command what he wants to drink
3.when he left he hugged me and smelt my perfume and rubbed his hands up and down my waist ....eewww!
If I have workmen for eg in the house I will offer tea and biscuits. I have spoken to some friends and they say they dont because they want them in and out, not slurping teas taking their time! I think I have an issue with the fact that this hairdresser felt he was entitled to whatever he wanted like my flat is a coffee shop!
Has anyone ever used mobile hairdressers and if so, what is your way of dealing with them?
Any tips appreciated.
I want to be polite and friendly but not the extent that they think they are my guests and start taking liberties =)
