This question arises from a conversation I had here earlier - and it’s something to talk about other than the miseries of Coronavirus so that can’t be a bad thing.

So … the Marxist Mantra -

"From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs".

Can that ever work in any society - and if not, why not?

Yes I agree.
That would never work.
The nearest example I can think of is an Israeli Kibbutz.

And they aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.
Naomi @ 15:51 - You missed the point completely.
I was talking about a willingness, not coercion, to work for the common good.
Question Author
I didn't mention either. Whatever the circumstances it's unworkable.
So what do you approve of? Devil take the hindmost?
Question Author
//So what do you approve of? Devil take the hindmost?//

Why would you think that? In your world are there no other options?
What about your thoughts?
Obviously not Marx.
But who or what?
"The nearest example I can think of is an Israeli Kibbutz."

That's interesting.

How did the kibbutzim turn out Theland?
Question Author
Theland, my thoughts are not influenced by anyone or anything in particular. It’s quite simple. Those who are able must take responsibility for themselves and their families. Those who *genuinely* aren’t able to do that must be cared for by the rest.
That sounds like Socialism to me.
Question Author
In that case I suggest you research Socialism. You're suffering under a misapprehension.
I do understand the concept of socialism.
I also understand the concept of rampant capitalism.
And the bankers? They all became socialists in 2008 when they needed a bailout and then reverted to capitalism when the money came rolling in again.
Question Author
Theland, you want a share in the success of Capitalism and you’re a Capitalist when it suits you. You bought a house - not the Socialist way at all - but when you sold it did the proceeds go to benefit society? No. You shared it between your children - just as a Capitalist would - only he does it honestly. Like a lot of people you pay sanctimonious lip service to Socialism - but you don’t practice it.
I can only practice it by voting for it, but only if there is a sensible party to vote for.
Cob was not for me, he carried too much baggage, but McDonnels economic policy was attractive.
Question Author
Another cop out.
Oh dear. Your gloves are off already :-(

Cop out?
What would you have me do?
Get out in the street with my placard and demand the fall of the government?
But McDonnell had a lot of baggage also Theland. Some would say he was a bigger supporter and apologist of the IRA terrorists than Corbyn was.
YNA etc - Yes, you are right. A pity.
Question Author
Theland //Oh dear. Your gloves are off already :-( //

There you go again. Didn't take you long to start playing the victim again. If you don't want my opinion don't ask me questions.

//What would you have me do? //

Practice what you preach - or stop preaching.
Cop out?
Can you explain that?
Practice what I preach?
Being what?
