About 500 years ago in menswear - waistcoats and trousers
I never realised until I put my son's jeans on by mistake, that their pockets are so much bigger!
It was certainly Europeans that first used pockets

I think it was the Chinese;
Confucius he say, 'man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day'.
Then snooker pool billiard tables had to get in on the act gotta pick a pocket or six .
