It is required in law. A poll clerk is charged with the responsibility of asking, and the voter with the responsibility of making a binding statement of legal right to vote. Both the voter and clerk are liable for prosecution if this procedure is not met before the ballot paper is issued. Believe me it is a pain to ask every voter this question, even more of one to listen to the indignant "country going to the dogs" and civil liberties and privacy tirade. Get a freakin postal vote if it is an issue. As an aside ... the most polite group of voters last Thursday were the teenagers and young people. Middle aged "ladies" were all either hyper or comatose. No Kidding.
Bring on I.D. verification all day long for me. I will just get a couple.

Many people don’t have a car or take foreign holidays because they are poor and cannot afford to.
If the criteria for voting is being changed so that only comfortably off people are allowed to vote, they should say so.
The last time ID cards were muted, they failed because the £150+ cost per person purchasing one was deemed prohibitive.
Give all 65 million UK citizens a free ID card, and I see nothing wrong with producing it to vote. If millions are denied a vote because of a Government charge for ID cards, and it is a lot of money, then I believe it is anti democratic, anti poor people, and a cynical move to kill the anti Tory vote.

you dont have to have the card - I think it works quite well
otherwise I can easily see the temporary civil servants ( workers at the polling stations) making up all sorts of reasons why people cant vote.

65 million people won't be voting, just those over 18, people over 65 have a bus pass with photo i.d, then theres all the car drivers, people with passports, people who already have i.d cards for work.

I did not say that you had to carry the card. Having the card, with number to show, cuts down the time finding the would be voter on the electoral list at that station. Even with the card, and with a name and address showing, the poll station staff are charged with making the card carrier confirm their I.D. and address. The selfish who decide to call without the card or better still pretend that it is not in their pocket(seen it) slow down the whole process for everyone. I.D. cards would be a blessing .. preferably with a picture on it.
TOGO, the Site Rules state, "Any instances of members referring to other members as anything but their preferred names will be removed."
Other than using upper case letters, which I do for every username to make them stand out, what is different from his actual username?
