Seeing so many posts about religion gets me wondering:

For those agnostics / atheists ....

can I ask:

are your beliefs because you've been hurt by regions / followers of religion
or
Is it your conclusion based on the academics / science of it
or
is it a combination of both.

Not wanting to stir the pot - just interested.

You're welcome, bobbi.

As for sinners, I spent a considerable amount of my young years wondering what I'd done to cause Jesus to be killed - and I wept buckets in the process. How anyone can find any justification for imposing guilt where none exists is beyond my comprehension. That's wicked.
"are your beliefs because you've been hurt by regions / followers of religion
or
Is it your conclusion based on the academics / science of it
or" - first of all I don't have any beliefs. My absence of belief is down the implausibility of the who idea.
whole idea
To say that to a child is evil Naomi
naomi - // ... forget everything you've been taught about religion and really - really - read the bible. All the evidence you want is there - well, that's for those who want the evidence. //

Surely the bedrock of any rationale is interpretation.

Any two people can read anything and come to entirely different conclusions about what it means, and what you should do about what you think it means.

Last night I watched thunder and lightning.

As a product of education, I know it is a scientific phenomenon and I accept it as such.

If I were a caveman, I would have whimpered and fretted until dawn, thinking the end of the world was here.

The thunder and lighting has not changed - only the interpretation of what it actually is has.
"what age were you (approx obv) when you reached your decision on your beliefs?" - again atheism is not a belief it's the absence of belief. I was about 4 years old when I went to Sunday school, I enjoyed the stories but instantly realised it was bow locks. I spent the rest of my life in wonder at how anyone with any intelligence could believe such BS.
gness's experience highlights the evil of religion the sheer hard bigotry of it. It serves no useful purpose, creates hate and conflict. If I could click my fingers and expunge the silliness from the world I would.
sadly ttt even if you managed to erradicate religion there would still be (mainly) men who want to hurt and subjugate (mainly) women and they'd simply find another framework to do it
AH, to gauge whether or not the bible needs to be interpreted you would have to read it. I've never found it so.
I think bigotry should be included in the 7 deadly sins !
I think the word 'sin' should be stricken from the language. A truly awful concept.
According to the Church you ‘sin’ when you have children, when they are christened the mother must take communion to cleanse herself of sinning!!!!
The church is big on sex, bobbi. Same with Islam. Religion thrives on it. ;o)
Religion wasn't part of my upbringing apart from the singing of a few hymns and the usual Easter/Christmas school things so the whole thing just seemed like a bit of fun. I had a schoolfriend who's family were pretty religious and I really couldn't believe how much they let those funny stories govern their beliefs about how the world works, their lives and attitudes towards others. I remember asking some logical questions about it and not really being very satisfied with the "God's mysterious ways" type answers and concluded then whole thing was made up and nothing since has convinced me otherwise.
