Lady J, I can see that Israel feels surrounded by hostile religions (If only we didn't have these frightful religious divides!), but treating Palestinians badly does not help. I think that only Israel believes that God gave them their land and ordered them to exterminate the people who lived there. They may have got away from the literal interpretation of God's orders, but that ideology does remain in their culture.

I think that you defend yourself. But intelligent defence does not necessitate measures over and above self-defence. Of course, strong retaliation is always an option, but I still believe that violence begets violence. It is clear that turning the other cheek does not give you victory, and it is clearly not followed by so-called 'religions of peace'. The world carries on fighting. Jesus, Ghandi, Buddha; none of them have changed human nature enough to avoid conflict. Only centuries of secular human efforts and cultural evolution and eduation have managed to reduce the amount of slaughter that goes on.

Lady J;
I think that only the gradual removal of religious thinkig will help the human race. By religion, I mean non-rational beliefs. This will take time, and I'm not sure if we have time. The world is less violent now than in the past, and if we can avoid the rise of non-rational ideologies we can continue the trend towards less violence. If people are prevented from being given proper education and instead are trained to believe unsubstantiated claims of after-life return to the safety of the womb, then we don't have much hope of a future.
