people, the ordinary folk , think they are fighting the Ukrainians for, as they are supposedly all the same nationality? Their sons, brothers and fathers are all being killed and they must questioning why?

For many Russians, the fact they may regard Ukrainians as similar in some way just makes them hate Ukrainians all the more for “deserting” them.
Look what is happening now: by some estimates half a million Ukrainians ha e been forcefully abducted to Russia.
Stripped of their identities and many children shipped to Russian orphanages.
I had a dealing with a Russian orphanage once: they were keen to dispatch kids out of there for their own good (!)

As I understand it, they are told that they are liberating a nation from a corrupt Nazi government who are committing genocide on Russians there, and breaking an old agreement not to seek protection from the hostile autocracy next door to them. At least those unwilling or unable to access independent news media to understand the reality get told that.
