Was there any specific technique or hand on things people used to find the Qibla direction before compass came in? not only Qibla, but any direction, how did they use to find such direction?

Probably used the sun & stars.

you can use a watch to find any direction.

...but of course the compass probably predates the watch!

in the northern hemisphere, they could use the pole star to find north then work out any direction from that.

Using the stars is not very helpful when you are in a strange place in the middle of the day
