I just don't get it, if you are good at your job you don't need it so clearly it's just a device to protect the terminally she-ite at their jobs. Why would anyone want to do that?

You might be the greatest worker in the country, but if you employer is a cock, they will mistreat you and there is nothing you can do about (except sack yourself).
Some professions don’t need a Union, and if you are lucky enough to be in that position, good for you. But in some professions, and with some employers, it is necessary, and justified.

Husband was a joiner preretirement. His company was asked to fix ceilings in factory offices. Husband turns up and was refused entry because he wasn't in any union. He toddled off and joined the lollipop union, returns to carpet factory and fixed office ceiling. He was both bemused and amused plus slightly puffed at the stupidity

In private sector i'd largely agree with you... my wifes private employer dont even reconise unions and just says 'take it or leave it''' its all we can afford, the doors open if you dont like it, and my company have give us under 5% even with a union because people cant afford to strike or risk job losses or unpaid leave.... but public sector unions beleive that goverment has a bottomless purse and can always afford more through taxes

" - yes you can leave and get a better job. I've been to many interviews but I'm interviewing them not the other way round. if you are any good you can do that. Unions exist so that people who are carp at their jobs can get jobs.
