It's not at all strange IMHO. Neither is it true. I am not aware of children's pretend games being proscribed except by the parents on an individual basis, not generally unless in public possibly.
When I worked in the NHS from 1980s to 2000 we had a few transgender patients. Back then they didn't shout it from the rooftops but just got quietly on with their treatment .
Being transectual is nothing to be ashamed of or proud of. We are what we are all human beings, but goodness me we don't need to shout our differences from the rooftops, as Andres says.
