... which will put private schooling out of reach of many parents, resulting in an added burden to the already over-crowded classrooms in state schools.   Similarly, they say they are against private health care which also alleviates the burden on the State system.  Nevertheless, Mr Starmer would rather his loved ones suffer than use it.   So the question is when 'going private' means that people take responsibility for themselves it follows that the State has less to cope with, so what's so bad about it?

OK, so now we have two people on average income, more than one of whose entire income is spent on school fees (if they only have one child), with rent/mortgage likely to be at least £1500/month – they will be left with less than £10k to pay council tax/water/gas/electricity/food/insurance/transport etc.

Naomi24 ,

I can't say how much it pains me to do this but I've reported your post of 20:59 yesterday.

To call the man who will be our next PM a liar goes beyond the bounds of decency.  It wouldn't be allowed in Parliament, it shouldn't be allowed here.

Your prerogative, sandyRoe

To call a politician a liar goes beyond the bounds of decency – well I never.

//To call the man who will be our next PM a liar //

PMs would never be liars would they! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Now come om chaps, have a little sympathy.  I expect sandyRoe thinks some women have penises too.

In my limited experience I've not found that to be so.

SKS is walking a very slippery tightrope.  He feels he can't afford to offend anyone.

He's offending people who are only just able to pay for private education. They think it's not fair, missing the point that it's not fair for everyone else who couldn't pay for private education already. State education has to be better.

Question Author

Ellipsis, do you mean State education should be better or it is better?

Should be. It's good in places, but it's very bad in other places, and on average it's not good enough.

private education is a luxury service. there is no reason it should get a tax break at a time when the UK government requires more revenue. the conflation with private healthcare is sneaky and dishonest.

what labour are proposing here is to revoke a privilege... the policy does not punish people for using private schools, it simply puts them in the same position as other businesses.

hymie is quite right

All my children have been to private school at some stage in their education. I can't see a problem in adding vat to school fees. They were exempt on 'charity' status which is outdated now and they provide a service so should charge vat.

To Naomi, best when making slanderous allegations against a public figure to preceed with 'in my opinion'. 😄 sandy is correct, you would be removed from the House of Commons for saying what you said, no doubt protesting strongly you had not said it, or the pm's were of not high enough intelligence to understand what you really meant 😂😂😂

Another who believes the man when he says women have penises.  Still you got that off your chest, AuntiePoll.  Most amusing.    🤣

I was very comfortable to call Boris Johnson a liar throughout his time as prime minister ...

^ Yes, but he was and a Tory to boot.  ;-)

Naomi, you argue that private health care takes some of the burden away from the state, but why do people choose to go private? Altruism, or a desire to jump the queue and get treatment faster. Doctors doing private work at times when the could be working for the NHS is not helping the have nots.

if doctors can earn more working for private clinics then that is an incentive for people to become doctors... the actual issues in our health services are due to labour and infrastructure shortages... it isn't caused by too many people getting sick or injured or by some people going private

it's also a totally separate issue to private education

Question Author

perseverer, it's not altruism but rather the capability of being treated sooner.  That, however, has a positive knock-on effect of adding to State coffers and of alleviating the burden on the NHS.

I don't agree that private health care is a separate issue to private education.  Anyone who takes themselves out of the State system is taking responsibility for themselves albeit they're paying twice for what they get.

Wheen I look back to education in the 50s I have to wonder where it all went wrong. Back then we had Grammar, Secondary Modern, Technical colleges , Special schools for those needing extra tuition , Special schools for children with medical problems , free nurseries unless you were working and then you only paid a nominal amount. . Grants  for school uniforms and grants for universities. Teacher training colleges  . Private schools .
