Just been watching the news on these so called savings on these cards. My opinion is that there are nothing more than a scam. Why? because they inflate the price of a product then reduce it back to the normal retail if you have the card. If you dont have or want the card you end up paying the inflated price, but most people will just walk away from the inflated price, so in affect they are shooting themselves in the foot. Whats your veiw on the subject.

Had ours for many years and I believe in the past the benefits were greater but we still make at least £300 a year in addition to the savings on shopping.

We're happy.  I do compare prices on the Trolley app and many of the clubcard prices are cheaper than the competitors.

They wouldn't be doing it if it didn't work for them.

My view is that they know what they are doing and don't feel they are shooting themselves in the foot. Careful shopping around and using offer opportunities can save me a fair sum. Yes, the supermarkets get extra sales as I buy things from, say, Tesco I might otherwise have bought elswhere, but that's a win-win for me and Tesco.  Savvy customers know whether the offe ris a fair offer or a con.

Oh it appears to be working for them if a percentage of people are paying the inflated price. I would list all the items that have been inflated in the past months ladybirder but one is Marmite that i eat a lot of. The larg jar, or at least the one i buy is £2.99 , Sainsburys had it on sale at £3.50 less the loyalty card, back down to £2.99. So for a time some folk were paying the inflated price. I believe the so offer is now off, so everyone is paying £2.99.

Loyalty cards have nothing to do with loyalty.

They are there to keep track of what people buy or can be persuaded to buy.

Over twenty years I've had my Tesco club-card and do find the savings helpful... (Club-card Price) cheaper on my usuals etc.. and the Clubcard points that accumulate for Christmas for eg... my only gripe is 'specially selected for you' Vouchers... as a single bloke I don't really have any need for discount on Ladies products.

Loyalty card or not I wouldn't touch Marmite with a bargepole 🤢🤮

Some of the loyalty cards also require you to have the app on your phone, so many older people are being well over charged ( paying the inflated price) because they dont have the phones, or able to travel round to get cheaper buys if and when they are available.

Agreed

Agreed was in response to Dustypuss.

I think it is obviously a scam as they ain't going to minimise their peak profit. So folk get them, and the store spies on them. But get enough of them and no store gets a clear picture of you. Ideally get cards for both yourself and your partner. Ignore any that want you to pay to join, they simy lose your trade. Consider carefully those who require you to have a "smart" phone as they are hardly being fair to all customers. And expect stores to either fail to log you on to WiFi or else pretend you are connected but confess not to the internet when trying to get their app up to use. Ideally use a physical card instead.

As a older person that you're referring to . If you need a app I don't go to that supermarket.  I like a card.

Like it or hate it, its an example of an item thats been in the loyalty card system. It was to explain what i believe to be a scam. I could list many many more but I'm sure you get the idea with this item.

I do a fair bit of shopping for my neighbour weekly, she doesn't use computers.

One item she buys every week has been £7 for months. Now the Clubcard price is two for £8.

Another item is usually £8, currently included in 'any three for £10'.

Last week she bought 6 each of these two items.  Huge savings for her

as I've posted above I've had my card for years and physically used to go shopping in store... still no problem using the card these days, the App and On-line shopping are additional options.

I opted for the latter for both during the first lock-down.... and I'm never going back I tell you I'm never going back!

Loyalty cards just turn me off - makes some people buy more than they otherwise would & maybe leads to more wasteage.

I see Lidl have introduced a loyalty "app". I hope Aldi don't do the same.

Morrisons regularly have discounts up to a third on malt whiskies, The Singleton, rrp £40 for £24.00 for example.

Roll on the end of sober October.

I'd have never have guessed you are a Scotsman Douglas.

...simply...

I have approx £50 on my nectar card, just enough for a couple of bottles of gin and a small treat or two at Christmas. No probs here 🙂
